Celebrating 20 Years of the Eastern Gas Pipeline

Melbourne, Vic., Sep. 22, 2020 /Medianet/ --

Jemena’s Eastern Gas Pipeline (EGP) reached a milestone this month, with the 797km pipeline celebrating 20 years of operation. Shortly after commissioning, the EGP would go on to light the Sydney Olympic flame, while delivering safe and reliable gas to New South Wales homes and businesses for the next two decades.

The EGP is a vital link connecting gas from Victoria’s Gippsland Basin to the east coast market, and – typically – transports around half of the gas consumed in New South Wales each year.

Owned and operated by leading energy infrastructure company, Jemena, the pipeline was initially able to transport around 45PJ of gas per annum. Since acquiring the EGP in 2007, Jemena has invested more than $237 million to expand its capacity by around 300 per cent to meet demand for natural gas across Sydney and much of regional New South Wales. As a result of Jemena’s expansion efforts the EGP is now capable of transporting around 360TJ of gas per day.

Jemena’s Manager of Media and External Affairs, Michael Pintabona, said the pipeline continues to play a crucial role as a feedstock underpinning manufacturing activities and electricity generation across New South Wales.

“Gas from the EGP is fed directly into the Jemena gas distribution network in New South Wales which provides safe and reliable natural gas to over 1.4 million homes and businesses,” said Mr Pintabona.

“Gas from the EGP is used by around 36,000 commercial customers and over 400 industrial customers who go on to make everyday items including pharmaceuticals, housing materials, and glass bottles.”

Mr Pintabona said Jemena believes the EGP will continue to play a key role in Australia’s energy market.

“We recently announced plans to modify the EGP turning it into a bi-directional pipeline that is capable of servicing both the New South Wales and Victorian markets.”

“Our plans will also see the EGP connect in with a proposed LNG import terminal at Port Kembla, which will help bring much needed additional gas to market, while helping to place downward pressure on gas prices.”

The EGP cost around $450 million roughly $725 million in today’s dollars to construct.
