WHEN: 10.30AM, FRIDAY 25 SEPTEMBER 2020.

This Friday over 70 school students from the ACT will take to the lawns of Federal Parliament, in one of over 400 COVID-safe actions around Australia, demanding that the Morrison government rule out plans to give billions of dollars in public money to the gas industry. Full demands outlined below.

The September 25th: #FundOurFutureNotGas day of action is Australia’s first national day of action against the gas industry, and one of the largest actions against gas undertaken in this country. Hundreds of actions have been planned across Australia - from Perth to Cairns, Darwin to Hobart, to the red centre of Alice Springs.

Jimmy Hollo, Year 9, said: “Giving billions of taxpayer dollars to the polluting gas industry is clearly an irresponsible use of public funds, and this pandemic will not stop young people from around Australia organising against the government’s gas plans. Students want Scott Morrison to invest recovery funds in renewable energy. This will create thousands of jobs while also helping to tackle climate change.”

Rosie Brady, Year 11, said: “The Prime Minister is trying to prop up big gas companies with public money, entrenching a fossil fuel which will only make climate change worse. It’s appalling. If Morrison’s gas plans go ahead, I’ll have to see my chance of a happy, free and sustainable future fade away before my eyes. I will not stand by and let that happen.”

The day is organised by the School Strike 4 Climate network, joined by First Nations communities and 22 unions representing over one million workers, including the United Workers Union - which has coverage of many gas workers, the Maritime Union of Australia - which represents offshore gas workers, and the Australian Nurses and Midwives Association - the biggest union in Australia.

School Strike 4 Climate demands

The demands of September 25th are that no public funds are spent on gas or other damaging fossil fuels. Instead, recovery funds should be spent on:

  1. Resourcing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led solutions that guarantee land rights and care for country,

  2. Creating jobs that fast track solutions to the climate crisis and help communities recover.

  3. Backing projects that transition our economy and communities to 100% renewable energy by 2030, through expanded public ownership.
