Queensland Government joins world-leading Zero Carbon Certification Scheme: Super-charging renewable hydrogen, ammonia & metals

20 July 2021: Smart Energy Council and Hydrogen Australia are pleased to announce the Queensland Government has become a Founding Partner in its Zero Carbon Certification Scheme.

“The Queensland Government is again showing terrific leadership in unlocking the great potential of renewable hydrogen, green ammonia and metals such as green zinc,” said John Grimes, Chief Executive of the Smart Energy Council.

“The Queensland Government set a new benchmark last month with the establishment of a $2 billion renewable and hydrogen fund to supercharge jobs. It is all about development of Queensland’s resources sector while at the same time delivering on its renewables commitments. Its fantastic to have them on board,” said Mr Grimes.

Queensland Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen, Mick de Brenni said:  "The production of hydrogen as a fuel gives us potential to power transport and export energy to the world, but to truly decarbonise. Queensland hydrogen has to be made from Queensland sunshine and wind.

“As a founding partner of the Smart Energy Council’s Zero Carbon Certification Scheme, buyers of Queensland’s hydrogen can choose a product made by electrolysers powered only from renewable energy.

“We are sending a very clear message that Queensland is serious about decarbonising, and that our hydrogen can be produced to the highest environmental standards.”

The Zero Carbon Certification Scheme is a certificate of origin scheme for renewable hydrogen, renewable ammonia and renewable metals.

"Its an absolutely critical step in building the industries of the future such as the Sun Metals’ green zinc refinery near Townsville,” said Mr Grimes.

The Queensland Government becomes the fourteenth Founding Partner of the globally significant Zero Carbon Hydrogen Certification Scheme, including Queensland green blockchain company HydroREC and ‘Internet of Things’ company Gasbot.
